Face Reality Soothing Clay Mask — triple clay purifying mask for oily, acne-prone, and congested skin

Size: 2.5 oz / 74ml

What it does for your skin

A professional-grade clay mask that combines three distinct clays — bentonite, kaolin, and illite — with activated charcoal, witch hazel, and a natural antimicrobial complex to deeply purify pores, absorb excess oil, and calm inflammation simultaneously. Unlike single-clay masks that simply dry the skin, this formula is carefully balanced to purify without stripping — the natural olive-derived emollients and leuconostoc ferment prevent the clay from over-drying while ensuring the detoxifying ingredients do their work.

Key benefits

  • Triple clay complex (bentonite, kaolin, illite) draws out impurities from multiple depths
  • Activated charcoal provides additional deep-pore purification
  • Witch hazel tones and tightens pores during treatment
  • O-Cymen-5-OL provides natural antimicrobial action against acne bacteria
  • Olive-derived emollients prevent over-drying while the clay purifies
  • Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate supports microbiome balance
  • Leaves pores visibly tighter and skin smoother after every use

Best for

Oily, combination, acne-prone, and congested skin types needing a weekly deep-cleansing reset. Also suitable for sensitive skin that needs detoxification — the kaolin clay and balancing emollients make this gentler than most clay masks. Ideal as a weekly treatment to maintain results between professional facials.

How to use

Apply an even layer to clean skin, avoiding the eye area. Leave on for 10-15 minutes until nearly dry but not fully cracked — removing at the fully dry stage pulls moisture from the skin. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Use once or twice weekly. Follow immediately with toner and moisturizer to restore hydration. Do not leave on overnight.

Jasmine's note

“I use this in-studio for clients who come in with active inflammation and congestion. Clay masks have a bad reputation for being drying but this one is formulated to calm at the same time it purifies — that's the olive-derived emollient system working alongside three different clays. The triple clay combination is what makes it more effective than single-clay masks: bentonite draws out deep impurities, kaolin handles surface oil without over-stripping, and illite adds mineral-rich refinement. My oily and combination clients love it as a weekly reset — it's the treatment that keeps them from needing as many professional extractions.”

Key ingredients

  • Bentonite — highly absorbent volcanic clay that draws out deep-seated impurities and toxins from pores; the most powerful of the three clays in this formula for deep purification
  • Kaolin — gentle white clay that absorbs surface oil without over-drying; the mildest clay available and the ingredient that makes this mask suitable for sensitive and combination skin alongside the more powerful clays
  • Illite — mineral-rich green clay that tightens pores, improves circulation, and adds trace minerals to the skin during treatment; bridges the gap between gentle kaolin and powerful bentonite
  • Charcoal Powder — activated charcoal acts like a magnet for pore-clogging debris, sebum, and environmental pollutants; adds a fourth layer of purification to the triple clay complex
  • Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Water — tones and tightens pores during treatment; reduces post-mask redness and refines skin texture
  • O-Cymen-5-OL — gentle but effective natural antimicrobial that targets acne-causing bacteria during the mask treatment period
  • Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate — natural preservative with microbiome-supporting properties; maintains beneficial skin bacteria while the clay purifies
  • Cetearyl Olivate & Sorbitan Olivate (Olivem) — olive-derived emollient complex that prevents the clays from over-stripping the skin's natural moisture; the ingredient system responsible for the non-drying feel after removal
  • Glyceryl Ricinoleate — castor-derived emollient that maintains skin comfort during treatment
  • Glycerin — humectant that draws moisture into skin to further offset the drying tendency of clay

Complete your routine

Use this mask as your weekly deep-cleansing reset — pair it with these products for best results:

  • Before the mask: Cleanse with Face Reality Ultra Gentle Cleanser or Barrier Balance Creamy Cleanser to remove surface oil and makeup so the clay can work on the pores directly
  • After the mask — tone immediately with: Face Reality Moisture Balance Toner or Soothing Radiance Toner to restore hydration before the skin feels tight
  • Follow with serum: Face Reality HydraRemedy Gel Serum to replenish moisture lost during treatment
  • Moisturize with: Face Reality Clearaderma for oily and acne-prone skin, or Barrier Care Gel Cream if skin feels dry post-mask
  • For brightening: Apply Face Reality GlowTone Corrective Serum after the mask — freshly purified pores absorb serums more effectively
  • Weekly brightening pairing: Alternate this mask with Face Reality Brighten-C Mask — use the clay mask one week for purification, the Brighten-C the following week for radiance
  • Always finish AM with: Face Reality powerMineral SPF 50 or Mineral Matte SPF 28

Frequently asked questions

Why does this mask use three different clays instead of one?

Different clays work at different depths and with different intensities. Bentonite is the most powerful — it draws out deep-seated impurities but can be too drying alone. Kaolin is the gentlest — it handles surface oil without stripping. Illite sits between them in terms of intensity while adding beneficial minerals. Using all three together means the mask works at every level of the pore simultaneously, while the combination of strengths makes it more effective yet more balanced than any single clay alone.

Why should I remove the mask before it fully dries?

This is one of the most important clay mask tips and most people don't know it. When clay fully dries and cracks it has already absorbed everything it's going to absorb — and then it starts pulling moisture from the skin itself. Remove when the clay is nearly dry but still slightly tacky. You'll get the full purifying benefit without the dehydration that comes from leaving it on too long.

Is this mask safe for sensitive skin?

Yes — more so than most clay masks. The kaolin clay is one of the mildest ingredients in skincare and the olive-derived emollient system (cetearyl olivate and sorbitan olivate) actively prevents over-drying. I use this in-studio on clients with sensitive and combination skin regularly. If you have very reactive skin, start with 8-10 minutes rather than the full 15 and rinse immediately if you feel any discomfort.

How does this compare to the Hydracalm Mask?

They serve opposite purposes and work beautifully as a weekly rotation. The Soothing Clay Mask is for purification — drawing out oil, congestion, and impurities. The Hydracalm Mask is for hydration and recovery — replenishing moisture and calming stressed skin. I recommend alternating them: clay mask one week for oily and congested skin, Hydracalm the following week for hydration and recovery. Together they cover both sides of what skin needs most.
