What it does for your skin

A professional-strength L-mandelic acid serum formulated with an exceptionally comprehensive NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factor) base — including L-sodium hyaluronate, L-lactic acid, sodium PCA, sodium lactate, and urea — that hydrates while the mandelic acid exfoliates, clears, and brightens. The L-form of mandelic acid makes this gentler and more precise than standard mandelic formulations, and its larger molecular size relative to glycolic acid means slower, more even penetration — making it the preferred acid serum for sensitive skin and deeper skin tones prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Best for

Sensitive, acne-prone, combination, and oily skin types. Particularly suited to clients with deeper skin tones where post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a significant concern. The 5% is the starting strength for all new users; the 8% is for clients who have used the 5% consistently for 4-6 weeks without irritation and are ready for more visible results. How to use

Apply to clean, dry skin in the evening as directed during your consultation — typically 2-3 nights per week to start. Allow to absorb fully before moisturizing. Do not apply to broken or irritated skin. Always use SPF 50 in the morning — mandelic acid increases sun sensitivity. Can be alternated with benzoyl peroxide treatments on different nights.

Why does this serum have such a comprehensive hydration complex alongside the acids?

Most acid serums cause dryness because they exfoliate without replacing the skin's natural moisturizing factors. This formula includes urea, sodium PCA, sodium lactate, L-lactic acid, and L-sodium hyaluronate — five of the same molecules the skin naturally uses to stay hydrated. The result is a serum that exfoliates and brightens while actively replenishing moisture at the same time. Clients who have experienced dryness from other acid serums often find this one doesn't cause the same issue.

What is the difference between the 5% and 8%?

The same formula at two different mandelic acid concentrations. The 5% is the entry point — effective for new users and sensitive skin types while the skin builds tolerance. The 8% delivers more visible exfoliation, faster dark spot fading, and more significant texture improvement — for clients who have demonstrated their skin tolerates the 5% well. I always start new clients at 5% regardless of their experience with other acids, because professional-grade mandelic at this pH is more active than most products clients have used before.

Is this serum safe for darker skin tones?

Yes — and it's one of my top recommendations specifically for clients with melanin-rich skin. Mandelic acid's larger molecular size and slower penetration significantly reduce the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that can occur with more aggressive acids. The niacinamide in the formula also helps fade any existing dark marks simultaneously. This is the acid serum I reach for first for clients with deeper skin tones.

Can I use this with my benzoyl peroxide treatment?

Yes — but not on the same night. Alternate: mandelic serum one evening, benzoyl peroxide the next. These two actives address acne from completely different mechanisms — mandelic acid exfoliates and fades, BP kills bacteria — and when alternated they create a comprehensive clearing protocol.
