How to use

Apply to a cotton pad and sweep over cleansed face morning and/or evening as directed during your consultation. Do not rinse. Follow with serum and moisturizer. Always use SPF 50 in the morning — salicylic acid and vitamin C both increase sun sensitivity. Allow to absorb fully before applying other products.

For clients with acne and hyperpigmentation — which is the overwhelming majority of my acne clients — this is an efficient two-in-one step that eliminates the need for a separate brightening toner. The gluconolactone is the ingredient most people overlook — it's a polyhydroxy acid that exfoliates without stripping, and it actually strengthens the barrier while it works. Is it safe to combine salicylic acid and vitamin C in one product?

Yes — and this formulation proves it. The concern with combining these two ingredients is usually stability and pH compatibility, but Face Reality has formulated this toner so both actives remain effective without destabilizing each other. The low concentrations used — 0.5% salicylic and trace vitamin C — are calibrated for daily use in a toner format where they complement rather than compete with each other.

What is gluconolactone and how is it different from other acids?

Gluconolactone is a polyhydroxy acid (PHA) — the gentlest category of chemical exfoliant. Unlike AHAs (glycolic, lactic) which can be irritating, PHAs have a larger molecular size that penetrates slowly and evenly. What makes gluconolactone uniquely valuable is that it both exfoliates AND strengthens the skin barrier — it's the only acid that genuinely does both at the same time. For clients whose skin is both acne-prone and sensitive, this makes it ideal.

Can I use this alongside my other Face Reality actives?

Yes — this toner is designed to work within the Face Reality system. Use it after cleansing before your treatment serum. On nights you're using your Advanced Acne Med, apply the toner first, allow it to absorb, then apply the Acne Med and nothing on top. On other nights, follow the toner with your prescribed serum. Your consultation will map out the exact rotation for your skin.

How is this different from the Glycolic-Lactic Toner?

The Glycolic-Lactic Toner is primarily a resurfacing toner — its focus is exfoliation and texture improvement using AHAs. The Sal-C Toner is primarily a clearing and brightening toner — its focus is pore clearing with salicylic acid alongside brightening with vitamin C and niacinamide. I recommend the Sal-C for clients whose priority is acne management and fading dark marks; the Glycolic-Lactic for clients focused on texture, smoothness, and general brightening. Your consultation will confirm which is right for your specific concerns.
